In Helpjuice, the ToC is automatically generated based on the headings within your article. This feature enhances user experience by allowing readers to quickly find and access the information they need.
In this article, you’ll learn:
- How to add headings to your article
- How to manage ToC items
- How to preview the ToC in your article
- Troubleshooting: Why the ToC might not appear
How to Add Headings
To create a heading in your article:
- Select the text you want to use as a heading.
- Click on Paragraph t in the editor's toolbar.
- Choose one of the heading options (Heading 1 - 4) from the dropdown menu.

This will format your selected text as a heading, which will be included in the ToC.
How to Manage ToC Items
The editor automatically detects all Heading 1 - 4 elements and adds them to the Table of Contents. To manage which headings appear in the ToC:
- Click on the Table of Contents button in the editor.
- In the ToC settings, click on the "x" next to any heading you wish to remove from the ToC or regenerate the ToC

This allows you to customize the ToC to include only the most relevant sections for your readers.
Where to Preview the Changes
To see how the Table of Contents will appear to readers click on Preview.

The default design depends on the theme you're using and it's possible to customize it. See How To Submit Customization Requests.
Why the ToC Section Is Not Displayed on My Article Pages
If the Table of Contents is not visible on your article pages:
- Ensure that your article includes at least one Heading 1 - 4.
- Check that the ToC feature is enabled in your article settings.
- If you've recently upgraded to the new editor, your Knowledge Base might need to be updated to support the new ToC functionality.
- If the ToC section is still not displayed, you can submit a customization request and our team will be happy to implement it for you.
Best Practices
- Use meaningful headings: Make sure headings clearly describe the section content so readers can navigate easily.
- Keep headings concise: Short, clear headings improve readability and make the ToC easier to scan.
- Avoid overusing the ToC: Only use a ToC for longer articles or articles with multiple sections; short articles usually don’t need it.
